UN rapporteur points out patterns of American interventionism
The rapporteur, tasked with promoting a democratic and equitable international order, highlighted that Washington’s behavior demonstrates a continuous history of interventionism. He stressed that these recent incidents fit within a broader historical context.
"It's not an isolated event. What's happened in Venezuela or the new threats about Greenland -- the United States have attacked, bombarded several countries already. So there is a pattern of lawlessness," he said.
He further characterized the United States as traditionally interventionist, noting that under President Donald Trump, this conduct has intensified and now occurs without legal or moral justification.
"The United States had always been a very much interfering country. There is a long history of American interventionism. The new thing about President Trump is that it is happening without any kind of pretext, any reference to international legality, the respect of human rights, or the promotion of democracy," he added.
According to the rapporteur, Trump’s policies toward Venezuela appear motivated by a desire to access natural resources, while concerns raised about Greenland lack substantive justification.
He also expressed alarm over Europe’s response, criticizing what he called the continent’s lack of resistance to U.S. pressure.
"I think a major problem is the subservience of Europe to the United States' bullying. We have seen that the European Union has accepted 15% tariffs. We have seen that they have not reacted to what’s happened in Venezuela," he said.
Although European leaders have begun discussing potential measures in response to threats concerning Greenland, the rapporteur voiced doubt that they would be able to mount a strong counteraction.
He concluded that without a more robust and coordinated effort from other global actors, the United States’ interventionist actions are likely to continue largely unchecked.
