Greenland Spurns Trump's Hospital Ship Offer

(MENAFN) Greenland's government on Sunday flatly turned down a U.S. offer to dispatch a naval hospital ship to the self-governing island, rebuffing a gesture from President Donald Trump over a territory he has repeatedly sought to bring under American control.

Trump announced the plan Saturday on his Truth Social platform, framing it as a humanitarian mission coordinated with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, whom he appointed as his special envoy to Greenland.

"Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick and not being taken care of there," the U.S. president wrote. "It's on the way!!!"

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen wasted no time in shutting down the proposal, posting a pointed response directly on Facebook.

"That will be 'no thanks' from us," Nielsen wrote, before elaborating: "President Trump's idea to send a US hospital ship here to Greenland has been duly noted. But we have a public health system where care is free for citizens."

The exchange is the latest flashpoint in Trump's months-long campaign to assert U.S. influence over Greenland, which he has justified by invoking national security concerns tied to Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic. He had previously threatened sanctions against European nations that stood in opposition to the move.

Those threats were later walked back following Trump's meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where the two leaders said they had outlined a framework for potential negotiations involving Greenland and the broader Arctic — setting the stage for subsequent talks among the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland.

Trump also indicated that discussions around the U.S. Golden Dome missile defense system and its implications for Greenland remain on the table.
