Greenland Declines US Proposal to Deploy Hospital Ship
The proposal was announced by Trump on his platform, Truth Social, where he stated that the initiative would be coordinated with Jeff Landry, whom he recently designated as a special representative for Greenland.
“Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick and not being taken care of there,” says the US president. "It's on the way!!!"
Greenland’s response was swift and unequivocal. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen addressed the matter on Facebook, stating:
“That will be ‘no thanks’ from us,”
He further clarified his government’s position:
“President Trump’s idea to send a US hospital ship here to Greenland has been duly noted. But we have a public health system where care is free for citizens,”
The exchange comes against the backdrop of renewed interest from Trump in bringing Greenland under US control. He has previously argued that such a move is justified on national security grounds, particularly in light of concerns involving Russia and China. At one point, he warned of potential sanctions targeting European nations that opposed the proposal.
However, following discussions with Mark Rutte during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump stepped back from those threats. He later indicated that the talks had produced a preliminary framework for dialogue regarding Greenland and the broader Arctic region, with subsequent consultations involving the United States, Denmark, and Greenland.
