NATO Chief Describes Candid Talks with Trump Amid Iran War Tensions
“NATO wasn't there when we needed them, and they won't be there if we need them again,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
He also referenced his prior efforts to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, commenting: “Remember Greenland, that big, poorly run, piece of ice.”
The remarks followed a closed-door meeting between Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House.
Earlier, a White House spokeswoman said Trump believes NATO was “tested, and they failed” during the Iran war. “It's quite sad that NATO turned its back on the American people over the course of the last six weeks when it's the American people who have been funding their defense,” she added.
After the meeting, a NATO spokeswoman reported that Rutte and Trump engaged in a “frank” discussion, exchanging views on various issues tied to shared security, including matters concerning Iran. “The Secretary General underscored the importance of Allies continuing to step up to deliver a stronger, fairer Alliance,” she noted on the social media platform X.
